Renewable Heat Incentive
In Autumn 2011 the government launched the Renewable Heat Incentive which aims to revolutionise the way heat is generated in buildings. This is yet more new legislation from the government to increase the incentives to adopt renewable energy technologies and it is called the Renewable Heat Incentive.
Heating accounts for a very large proportion of our overall energy use and it’s therefore not surprising that there are a number of exciting heating innovations and technologies appearing which can harness heat from the sun and the ground to allow us to live sustainably “within our means” and dramatically reduce our carbon footprint.
The Renewable Heat Incentive works in a very similar way to Feed-In Tariffs in that the government will pay you a generation tariff for every kWh of heat energy you produce and you get to use that heat.

Biomass Boilers
Boilers that operate from alternative fuels such as biomass are available. Biomass fuel is available most commonly in the form of pellets or wood chips but can take a variety of forms. Good for reducing fuel costs and carbon footprints as the fuels are considered “carbon neutral” with the same amount of CO2 used to create them being released when the fuel is burned. The use of biomass boilers is expected to grow exponentially since the introduction of the Renewable Heat Incentive
Ground Source Heat Pumps
These work in principle in the same way as a refrigerator with a refrigerant equivalent being circulated to extract the heat from a particular area and move it to another. Again, some sites are more suitable than others but in the right location these systems can significantly reduce heating costs.
Solar Thermal
In the UK, Solar Thermal systems can provide you with around 50% or more of your hot water needs, dramatically reducing your boiler costs. These can be particularly advantageous to companies such as manufacturing plants that use a lot of water and spend lots of money heating it.
